In selecting the right material for the Ned Baumer-Miramar College Pool Complex in San Diego, all lanes lead to concrete masonry, specifically block. Architectural firm Richard Bundy & David Thompson specified standard precision block because of its suitability for meeting several owner criteria.

The block was factory shot blasted to achieve a velvety texture and consistent color, says Thompson. An integral waterproofing additive also served as the first step in a clear anti-graffiti coating system that was applied onsite.

Thompson is partial to designing in block. In addition to the aesthetic possibilities, he says, it provides low maintenance and a sense of permanence.
