As a dedicated member of the National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG), Plainfield, Ind., Kevin DeLucenay was chagrined to see a simple metal tube rising from the roof of the CSIA Technology Center, the Guild's training facility. DeLucenay, owner of Old Smokey Inc., Ashley, Ind., decided to do something about it.
First, he came up with an unusual design for a triple-spired masonry chimney with a twist. Then he mobilized fellow NCSG members, staff, and suppliers to contribute time and materials. The all-volunteer crew built the chimney in five days last July despite hot and humid conditions mingled with intermittent storms and reports of not-too-distant tornadoes.
