Members of the Mason Contractors Association of America will gather in Orlando on Feb. 22 - 24 for the group's annual business meeting and Masonry Showcase exhibit. Attendees will have the opportunity to view the latest masonry products, attend several educational sessions, participate in committee meetings and hear results of the past year's efforts, test workmanship skills against others in the industry, and have a good time.
Masonry Showcase, located in the West Hall of the Orange County Convention Center, will be open from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Feb. 23 and 24. The educational program includes several one-and two-day programs prior to the meeting, and nine sessions on Feb. 23 and 24. Topics for the 90-minute sessions include masonry in the school market, quality assurance and control, masonry codes, cleaning and inspection, and self-consolidating grout. (For information about the longer pre-convention programs, visit www.masoncontractors.org.)
Keynote speaker for MCAA's 57th annual convention will be Joe Clark, who was the subject of the movie Lean on Me, starring Morgan Freeman. Clark is best known as the man who used a bullhorn, baseball bat, and the strength of his convictions to turn a crime infested, drug-ridden, inner-city high school into an institution filled with serious learning. His message will stress how a commitment to youth can make America's future leaders better citizens.
Two performance-based competitions will be featured during the meeting. The International Skills Challenge features first, second, and third year apprentices who will have three hours to lay out and construct a project based on their skill level. The Fastest Trowel showcases the skills of journeyman masons who must complete as much of an 18-block-long wall as possible within 20 minutes.
The social agenda includes a golf tournament and visits to the Kennedy Space Center, Sea World, and Universal Studios.
