The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts project features 35,173 SQ. FT. of 3cm Portuguese limestone flooring and stairs in the public areas of the building. These areas include the Garage Connector Hallway (level P1), Plaza Lobby (level 2), Meet and Greet and Stage Entrance (Level3), Grand Hall (Level 4), the Grand Staircase and East and West stairways in the Grand Hall.
The design of this building is a series of complex geometries which resulted in a curved floor plan for the lobbies. The Plaza Lobby and Grand Hall also have radiant heating and cooling systems embedded in the concrete substrate. These two features combined with multiple subcontractor coordination, imported stone and a tight schedule resulted in a challenging masonry project. The expected temperature swing of the radiant flooring systems and tight tolerances imposed by the architect required detailed engineering to size the control joints for the potential expansion. JE Dunn used Building Image Modeling (BIM) for the floor tiles in these curved areas to determine the best location of the control joints and which tiles would need to be cut on a radius. BIM's 3D modeling capability was used where the sloped glass supporting mast columns intersected the stone flooring. Each of the twenty-seven mast columns are sloped at a different angle resulting in unique elliptical cuts for each of the fifty-four 3 cm stone flooring pieces that butt to these columns.
Outstanding masonry craftsmanship coupled with advanced technology allowed JE Dunn to provide a product that exceeded the owner's expectations.
