While perhaps not a perfect economic indicator, the strong response to the Brick Industry Association’s 2014 Brick in Architecture Awards call for entries spiked this year with more than 150 entries. Of these entries, the judges honored 40 winners in this 25th anniversary year.

Perhaps it was just a coincidence, but this last week also saw the 50th competition of the SKILLS USA National Masonry Competition. This annual effort has been a key workforce development of masonry manufacturers and associations. Past participants of local, state, and national SKILLS events are on the wall every day building these award-winning structures.

These events symbolize masonry’s ability to survive despite economic downturns. But most importantly, the success of these events helps to encourage our commitment to the industry.
