When planning its new Hach Student Life Center, Northwood University, Midland, Mich., envisioned an appealing recreational facility using cost-effective construction techniques. The resulting 63,000-square-foot, single-story center uses single-wythe masonry loadbearing walls with an exposed block finish on both the interior and exterior, interspersed with glass block in a distinctive diamond pattern.

The exterior of the facility features three colors arranged in a horizontal band pattern, with a combination of split-faced and vertically striated, single-scored concrete block. The exposed interior of the single-wythe wall uses a smooth-faced painted finish, single-scored to create an 8-inch-square effect.
