American Home Products Corporation's new headquarters now under construction in Madison, New Jersey, is a masonry job of immense proportions. In their design for the project, The Hillier Group, Princeton, N.J., sought to emphasize the massiveness of the masonry. All the masonry is designed as a cavity wall system, with special attention given to the detailing of flashings, waterproofing membranes, and weep holes. But perhaps the most interesting aspect of the project's construction was the decision to prefabricate exterior brick soffits and sills onsite. With the fabrication taking place onsite, it was relatively easy to adjust for any variations discovered in field measurements. Furthermore, the prefabrication plan developed used readily available components and cost less than the proprietary support system under consideration.
