Redland PLC is one of the world's leading construction materials companies, employing 30,000 people in operations in more than 30 countries. Its main product groups include construction aggregates, roof tiles, and clay bricks. Following Redland's acquisition of Steetley early last year, Steetley Bricks' operations were merged into Redland Bricks Ltd. This combination makes Redland Bricks the second largest manufacturer of clay facing brick in the world, with the capacity to produce two billion bricks and pavers a year. Recently we met with Peter Johnson, the chairman of Redland Bricks Ltd. In his office an hour south of London, Johnson discussed the role of a multinational entity in a traditionally regional business and shared some of his views on the U.S. brick industry.
