Residential market leads surge as total masonry volume reaches $1.177 billion.
Contractors participating in our 5th annual article generated about $1.177 billion in 2005, exceeding the amount of any of the previous four lists and nearly $90 million more than the 2004 volume. The residential market led the way with a 6% volume increase over 2004, accounting for 21% of the total. The commercial/industrial/institutional (CII) market continues to dominate the total with about 65%, but took the entire percentage loss to the residential segment. The repair/ renovation/restoration (RRR) market gathered about 14% of the business, which has been a consistent amount over the previous four years. Eighty companies appeared in both years.
The residential spurt is a bit unusual when you consider that less than half the companies on the list do any residential work, and only five – Griffin Masonry, Charlotte, N.C., W.F. Libby Masonry, Stow, Maine, Spencer Brickwork, St. Louis, Mo., TCM Masonry, Mesa, Ariz., and Linwood Clark, Raleigh, N.C. – are exclusively residential contractors. However, the top three companies in the residential market experienced a borderline phenomenal growth.
McGee Brothers, Monroe, N.C. continued its dominance of our annual listing with a masonry revenue of $128.3 million, more than double that of #2, Western Construction Group, St. Louis, Mo. About 90% of McGee Brothers volume, or $115.3 million, came from the residential market. This amount is about $30 million higher that its 2004 residential volume. McGee's residential business is about 45% of the total amount generated by the entire list.
Griffin Masonry, another North Carolina residential giant, realized a nearly $10 million increase in 2005. Pompano Masonry, Pompano Beach, Fla., became a major player in the state's rapidly growing condo market and changed its market emphasis to take advantage of that business area. In 2004 the contractor was 25% residential with an $8 million volume, In 2005 Pompano Masonry was 85% residential with a volume of a little more than $22 million, or $14 million more than the year before.
