When to seal metal copings
How-To
-
As a general contractor I work with many different architects. Some architects call for sealant to be placed along the bottom edge of a metal coping and the masonry wall. Others don't. Is this sealant necessary or is it simply overkill?

Whether or not sealant is needed depends on how far the metal coping laps over the top edge of the masonry wall. If the metal coping laps less than 4 inches, sealant may be needed to prevent water from blowing up under the metal coping. If the lap is 4 inches or greater, the sealant probably is not necessary.
