How far beyond the face of the wall can I project a course of masonry without creating a problem?
A projecting band of masonry creates a ledge which can collect water during rains. This can lead to deterioration of the masonry if enough water is able to penetrate the wall at the ledge formed. I recommend using solid units at the ledge and projecting no farther than 3_4 inch. I also recommend cutting a 30 slope on the projecting portion of the brick, so that water can readily drain and not collect on the ledge.
