What tests should I require in my specifications to evaluate concrete brick? Is it appropriate to test concrete brick by the methods used to test clay brick masonry listed in ASTM C 67, Test Methods for Sampling and Testing Brick and Structural Clay Tile?
Concrete brick should meet the minimum standards set forth in ASTM C 55, Specification for Concrete Building Block, for the grade and type of concrete brick specified. Type I and II concrete brick should be tested in accordance with ASTM C 140, Test Methods of Sampling and Testing Concrete Masonry Units, to determine compressive strength and absorption rate. In addition to these tests, Type I concrete brick also should be tested according to ASTM C 426, Test Method for Drying Shrinkage of Concrete Block, to determine drying shrinkage.
