On brick-veneer, wood-frame, residential construction, how do you support the weight of the brick on the house side of a chimney?
Most building codes do not permit masonry to be supported by wood roof or floor members. There are two potential problems. First, the wood members may collapse in a fire, eliminating the support of the masonry. Second, over time the wood will creep under the masonry load, resulting in cracks or other problems in the brickwork. The masonry walls should be extended down through the house to the foundation. The interior brick provides an attractive finish for the fireplace and supports the weight of the chimney above.
