The brick I selected for a small commercial building was sitting around the brick supplier's yard for more than 2 years. Can brick this old be used?
If the brick show no sign of deterioration and if tests performed on the brick give satisfactory results, then the age of the brick actually may be beneficial. Clay units undergo permanent moisture expansion that begins just after firing and continues throughout the life of the brick. Most of this expansion, however, occurs within the first 1 to 4 years. If the brick have been in the yard for 2 years, most of the brick expansion probably already has occurred. The brick may actually perform better in the wall, with fewer cracks, than if it were new.
