The 125-year-old Old Virginia Brick has suspended operations and furloughed the majority of its workforce until further notice. That's according to a letter from company President C.W. McNeely posted on the door of the 125-year-old Salem business, reported The Roanoke Times in April. According to the report:
The letter said the company’s decision to suspend operations comes after a “seven-year decline in the demand for bricks used in high-end custom homes and prestigious architectural paver projects.”
It said staff is still assisting customers with existing orders, but the company is not accepting new orders. The letter said the company is developing a plan to restructure.
Old Virginia Brick has operated in Salem since 1890 at its location on West Main Street. It was called Old Salem Brick until the 1950s.
