The 2016 SPEC MIX Bricklayer 500 Regional Qualifier competitions are taking place in major cities all over North America. Top masons from all over are throwing their hat in the ring to earn a spot at the World Championship in Las Vegas, representing their country, state or province. Before they can advance to the World Championship round at World of Concrete on Jan. 18, in Las Vegas, and compete for the title: “World’s Best Bricklayer,” they have to take 1st place at one of the 22 regionals held in North America.
This October the last qualifying contest will be completed, and the World Championship roster of bricklayers and mason tenders will be set, including the returning Champion and SPEC MIX TOP CRAFTSMAN winner. With the addition of one international competitor, in total there will be 25 teams battling for the title, “World’s Best Bricklayer” as well as $15,000 in cash and prizes including the big payoff—a new Ford Super Duty F-250 XLT 4x4 truck.
With the 2016 Regional Series well underway, some of the winning bricklayers will be making their debut in the championship arena to challenge several experienced SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 masons; many of them previous winners. As the end of the season draws near, every week regional competitions take place, the championship roster gets longer, and the level of skill gets higher. To stay on top of the action, see the current list of bricklayers below, showing who will be packing their bags (and tools) for Vegas, where over 4,000 cheering spectators will see one mason crowned “World’s Best Bricklayer” and drive home the “Race Red” Ford F-250.

The Regional and World Championship competitions involve a two-person team consisting of a mason and mason tender that are given 60 minutes to construct a 26 foot 8 inch, double-wythe brick wall while meeting strict quality standards with a brick deduction system for craftsmanship infractions. The highest adjusted brick count wins the event.
The Regional Winners from this season will compete against the returning 2016 World Champion, Scott Tuttle of Utah and SPEC MIX TOP CRAFTSMAN, Darian Douthit of Oklahoma, who each laid 775 and 687 bricks, respectively. It goes without saying these decorated bricklayers will aggressively be defending their titles in Las Vegas next January.
The 2016 Regional competitions started in mid-June in St. Louis, Missouri, and will run through the 28th of October, when the regional season wraps in Dickson, Tennessee. Then, the winning masons will head to the big showdown in Las Vegas for a shot at a total cash and prize list worth $100,000 divided between five awards: Champion, SPEC MIX TOP CRAFTSMAN, second, third and SPEC MIX TOUGHEST TENDER.
