For the fourth consecutive year, McGee Brothers. Co., Monroe, N.C., topped the chart in Masonry Construction magazine's annual listing of top masonry contractors, based on last year's sales volume. The contractor posted a masonry volume of $85 million, which is significantly larger than No. 2 -Western Construction Group, St. Louis - and $130.1 of total sales in 2004. McGee Brothers is also the country's largest residential masonry contractor by a substantial margin, based on our survey results.

The 80 companies presented in our listing generated about $1.09 billion in masonry sales in 2004, which is a slight increase over the 2004 rankings. The commercial/industrial/institutional (CII) market generated about 72% of this volume, which is the same as last year. This large figure is not surprising since 92% of the companies listed participate in the market and 27 do only CII work, including several of the largest contractors.

The residential segment generated just less than 15% of the total, again the same as 2004. About 37% of the participants work in this market, with three - Griffin Masonry, Charlotte; Spencer Brickwork, St. Louis; and Linwood Clark, Raleigh -working exclusively in this category. McGee Brothers accounted for almost half of the residential volume, and Griffin Masonry provided almost 20%.
