The Masonry Society (TMS) and National Council of Structural Engineers Association (NCSEA) have joined forces to provide a series of six “Reinforced Masonry Webinars.” Each program will be 90-minutes long, including one or more question-and-answer sessions.
Feb. 5 - Masonry Basics, or Masonry 101
J. Gregg Borchelt of the Brick Industry Association will present an overview of masonry materials, terms, and properties. He will explain how these terms are related to the design and construction of reinforced masonry as outlined in design codes and standards, specifically the 2008 MSJC and the 2009 IBC.
Feb. 19 - Allowable Stress Design of Masonry
Dr. Russell H. Brown of Clemson University will discuss the design of reinforced masonry. His comments will focus on Chapter 2 of the MSJC and Section 2107 of the IBC. He will present simple design examples for walls subjected to out-of-place loads.
March 5 - Strength Design of Masonry
Dr. Richard E. Klingner of the University of Texas at Austin will review the strength design requirements of Chapter 3 of the MSJC for reinforced masonry and will highlight modifications of IBC Section 2108. He will present simple design examples for walls subjected to out-of-plane loads.
March 19 - Masonry Tallwalls
David T. Biggs of Ryan-Biggs and Associates PC will offer insights and real-life examples on the strength design of masonry.
April 2 - Reinforced Masonry Shear Wall Design
Dr. Russell H. Brown of Clemson University will offer insight on design provisions and examples for reinforced masonry shear walls by the allowable stress and strength design methods. He will offer a brief discussion on prescriptive seismic detailing requirements for shear walls.
April 16 - Ensuring Your Masonry Is Constructed as Designed
Michael P. Schuller of Atkinson-Noland and Associates Inc. will address masonry specifications, structural observation, and special inspection from the structural engineer's perspective. His discussion will offer insights on how to ensure the work is constructed as designed.
