Wisconsin Associations Produce Masonry DVD
The Brick Distributors of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Masonry Association have released an informational DVD showcasing a one-year technical diploma in masonry offered at three state colleges: Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College (Rice Lake), Waukesha County Technical College (Waukesha), and Southwest Wisconsin Technical College (Fennimore). The one-year technical program offers the skills needed for industry employability, including hands-on work, blueprint reading, math skills, work ethics, and communication.
“Students are needed to learn masonry in order to maintain the workforce and carry on the industry's tradition into the future,” said Don Borchert, masonry instructor at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College. “We aren't keeping pace with retirees in the workplace, and it's going to get worse.”
“We've had a great response from the educators who have previewed the DVD,” stated Dan Kelly, vice president of Janesville Brick and Tile Co. “It is 12-minutes long and designed to be a bright, engaging, and colorful piece geared towards high school students. The DVD illustrates what masonry offers as a career.” The associations delivered nearly 700 DVDs to high schools in October.

International Concrete Expo Will Launch in 2009
Representatives from the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA), Cast Stone Institute (CSI), Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI), and Portland Cement Association (PCA) have announced early plans for the International Concrete Exposition (Icon Expo), which will be held February 26 - 28, 2009, at the Indiana Convention Center & RCA Dome in Indianapolis. The event is intended to continue a long-standing tradition of presenting a combined trade show for the concrete industry.
“Since the 1980s, NCMA has joined together with other organizations to sponsor a combined trade show for the producers of concrete, masonry, and hardscape products,” said Steve Doty, chairman of NCMA (principal organizer for Icon Expo) and president of Peerless Block. “Previous industry events — dating back to the Masonry Expo and including the more recent Manufactured Concrete Products Exposition (MCPX) — have always been very successful for all of the participating organizations, highly valued by their members, and very productive for the exhibitors. We would like to extend an open invitation to all other concrete industry organizations to join with us in sponsoring Icon Expo.”
Nearly 6000 plant owners, managers, production personnel, and suppliers from 30 countries attend the concrete products trade show — including the 2005 event which was held in Indianapolis — making these events the largest trade show of their kind. The 2007 show held in Orlando featured more than 100,000 sq ft of the latest production equipment, materials, and services for the precast concrete, concrete masonry, interlocking pavers, and concrete pipe sectors of the industry.
