LAS VEGAS, NV- “Masonry Madness Day” was held February 6, 2013, at the World of Concrete/World of Masonry in Vegas! A theme created by SPEC MIX Inc., Masonry Madness Day is a collection of the most intense, exciting masonry competitions in the world and it all took place on one day, at one location. There was nothing like it on the planet! One event after the other, the best bricklayers, blocklayers, mason apprentices and tenders battled in four unique masonry contests to prove who is the world’s best. These highly skilled craftsmen competed for the largest value of cash and prizes awarded for any construction industry event held in the world—it was pure MASONRY MADNESS!


Consistently ranked as the top attraction during the World of Concrete tradeshow, this trowel and mortar party took place at the Las Vegas Convention Center’s Gold Lot. Spectators and webcast viewers witnessed an amazing display of human skill and endurance as over 75 masonry warriors fought for the champion title in their respective competitions. Throughout the day the crowd was given several chances to participate in sponsor demonstrations and games to win prizes and discover the latest product innovations impacting the efficiency and cost savings available to contractors. The action in the Gold Lot was as real as it gets. Anything can happen in Las Vegas, it especially did during “MASONRY MADNESS DAY.”



Billed as the main event for the competition series, when the 60-minute SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 came to an end the First Place title was awarded to , Fred Campbell, age 41, a mason and owner of Creative Masonry, located in Jonesborough, Tennessee. Campbell was declared ”World’s Best Bricklayer” with an adjusted total of 634 brick laid earning him the grand prize; a new 2013 Ford F-250, XLT, SuperDuty, CrewCab, 4 x 4 truck. Campbell also won $5,000 in cash, a STIHL GS 461 Rock Boss Concrete/Masonry Cutter, and thousands of dollars in additional sponsor prizes. Fred’s mason tender was Tony Shelton from Afton, Tennessee. This is the team’s first time in the winner’s circle at the SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 National.

The 2013 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 TOP CRAFTSMAN award was given to mason Steve Cleveland, age 38, of Midwest Masonry located in Mundelein, Indiana. Steve laid an adjusted total of 530 brick. The combined brick count and quality of his wall was judged the “most sellable” by the panel of 25 masonry officials. Steve’s mason tender was William R Hill III, from Hobart, Indiana. As the SPEC MIX TOP CRAFTSMAN, Steve won $5,000 in cash, a Multiquip PRO12 mixer, a STIHL GS 461 Rock Boss Concrete Cutter and thousands in sponsor prizes.

The 2nd place overall winner was a past champion, mason Ray Robinson, age 46, with JAM Construction, Lake City, Florida. With the help of mason tender Lynette Darby, Robinson laid 588 brick and won $4,000 cash, a IQ 360 14” Masonry Saw with built-in vacuum system and other sponsor prizes.

The 3rd place overall winner was mason Darian Douthit, age 41, of Providence Masonry located in Fairland, Oklahoma. Darian laid 576 brick and his mason tender was Fernando (Andy) Zepeda of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Darian won $3,000 in cash and several sponsor prizes.

This was the 11th annual event that pits 20 of the top bricklayers in the world to compete for one hour in this test of speed, skill and stamina to take home the gold! Journeymen bricklayers and their trusty tenders from all over the U.S., Canada, England and Australia fiercely competed for the title of “World’s Best Bricklayer,” and a total purse over $100,000 including a 2013 FORD F-250 4x4 Super Duty XLT truck. With over 4,000 spectators present and 7,000 plus live webcast viewers on the edge of their seats, this was clearly the Masonry Madness Day favorite.

MCAA’s FASTEST TROWEL ON THE BLOCK – 11:30 AM Pacific (local Vegas time) In this top blocklayer smackdown, masons pushed their skills and endurance to the limit for 20 grueling minutes of pure excitement. The event consisted of 14 teams that include one mason and two mason tenders that function like a well oiled machine. Sponsored by the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) and supported by AZ Best Block of Phoenix and SPEC MIX, Inc., the competitors battled for a total purse of over $15,000 in cash and sponsor prizes.

Mason Arcadio Armenta of Sutter Masonry in El Mirage, Arizona won First Place with a block count of 117 block that earned Arcadio $6,000 in cash and additional sponsor prizes.

Second Place was Alfredo Cardenas, of Pioneer Masonry, Phoenix, Arizona. Alfredo laid 113 block and won $2,500 in cash and additional sponsor prizes.

Third Place was taken by Raul Reyes, also with Sutter Masonry in El Mirage, Arizona, with 111 block laid. Raul won $1,500 in cash and additional sponsor prizes.

SPEC MIX TOUGHEST TENDER ®– 10:45 AM Pacific (local Vegas time) The world’s top mason tenders compete for the fastest time setting up their SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 workstation. Thousands of spectators watched as mason tenders hauled tons of brick, block, equipment and mortar to beat their peers and take home the cash and prizes. The SPEC MIX TOUGHEST TENDER® winner was Adrian Tena, of G&G Enterprises, Phoenix, Arizona. Adrian won the $2,500 in cash and additional sponsor prizes. The SPEC MIX TOUGHEST TENDER is a preliminary event held just before SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 National. In this event the mason tenders raced the clock to set up a predefined work area for the following bricklaying competition. Adrian’s winning time was 20:40 minutes.

MCAA’s MASONRY SKILLS CHALLENGE – 9:00 AM Pacific (local Vegas time) The crowd saw top bricklayer apprentices in their first, second and third year of training showcase their skills as they proved they have the RIGHT STUFF and stepped-up their game in this 3-hour bricklaying competition. The exciting competition spotlights our industry's finest young masons and focuses attention on careers in the masonry industry.

Mason apprentice Jeff Price of Mike Coates Construction, Niles, Ohio, took First Place in 1st year to win $750 in cash and additional sponsor prizes.

Mason apprentice Jeremiah Holland, Mosser Construction, Inc., Fremont, Ohio took First Place in 2nd year to win $750 in cash and additional sponsor prizes.

Mason apprentice Noah Spray, Central Masonry, Inc. in Huntington, West Virgina took First Place in 3rd year to win $750 in cash and additional sponsor prizes.
