Are all of your time-honored protocols and best practices well-documented and easily accessible online for your employees? If not, those "trade secrets" once passed down over time are at risk of being lost as your older employees retire. What's more, younger workers want that information at the touch of a button. Tom Jackson, Equipment World magazine, wrote about this issue and why it could cause big problems, after it came up more than once at a recent trade event. He notes:
If your young guys can’t–on their tablets or mobile devices–find the process for deciphering electrical fault codes and everything else involved in the maintenance and management of equipment, you’re going to be reinventing the wheel every time one person leaves or retires. The brain drain is about to kick into high gear, but as SixSigma says, tribal knowledge can be converted into company property. And that will be one of the most important challenges facing fleet managers and construction company owners for years to come.
