Perched on a natural ridge atop a wooded hillside, the Coconino Community College’s Lone Tree Campus in Flagstaff, Ariz., was designed for minimal environmental impact. The 128,000-square-foot facility features a masonry exterior that blends into the surroundings. The design minimizes cut-and-fill excavation and forest loss, and utilizes natural drainage patterns. The project’s success in these goals earned it an Award of Excellence in the 2003 National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) Design Awards of Excellence program.
Sun Valley Masonry, Phoenix, placed approximately 80,000 CMU and 70,000 square feet of exterior walls were sandblasted. The masonry contract came in at around $750,000.
