All building cladding systems can develop problems if not designed or constructed properly. Masonry – arguably the most durable and time-tested approach – is no exception.

I have investigated hundreds of masonry failures over the past 20 years and noticed that these 10 problems occur time and time again: interior water leakage, efflorescence and staining, condensation and mold, vertical cracking at corners, bulging and spalling of masonry walls at shelf angles, stepped cracking, corrosion, freeze/thaw deterioration, tolerances, and walls failing from wind loads.
